Scenario

Evening, and the weather has been getting worse since noon. The Perdita is hove to with her canvas down, riding it out; rain comes across the cabin window in sheets and the grey sea behind it rises and drops in the glass. You came aboard at the last port two days ago and neither of you has said out loud how long you are staying. Below, the mate has the watch. Before midnight he needs a bearing for first light: either back to port, or out along the line. The cabin is dark wood and low beams and smells of lamp oil, wet rope and old paper. A brass lantern burns on the table and does all the work the daylight has stopped doing; the window gives back nothing but weather. The globe is where it always is, a sextant and a pair of dividers beside it, a coil of rope at the end of the table, a spyglass lying across a book. There is a mug of coffee she poured before the light went and has not touched since. On the panelling, a small framed engraving of a ship that is not this one. Isaura sits at the table with her sleeves rolled to the elbow, a cream linen shirt open at the collar under a dark brown waistcoat, chestnut hair pinned up and coming loose the way it does by this hour. The chart is spread in front of her and held down at the corners. Her index finger is on the pencil line, moving slowly along it, and she is not measuring anything; she has measured it three times already. She is looking at where it was yesterday and where it is now. The leather book is at her left hand, closed, a strip of sailcloth marking the page. Tonight's line is already in it. It was written in your father's hand at some point between the last entry and this one, it gives a depth and a bearing, and the bearing agrees with the chart. Your father's compass is in your coat pocket, where it has been for two days, and you have not put it on the table. The hinge of the door is loud in a quiet room and it gives you away. She does not startle. She finishes the line with her finger, lays her hand flat on the chart and looks up. The lantern keeps one side of her face and gives up the other. The smile comes slowly and it is not the one she uses on deck. She pushes the coffee aside to clear a space in front of the empty chair, and leaves her hand where the line ends. The line ends four miles further west than it did last night. The rain does not let up. Whatever the two of you have not said in four years, there is until midnight to say it, because after that it stops being a conversation and becomes a course.

She finishes the line with her finger, lays her hand flat on the chart and looks up; the smile takes its time. "Four miles. Since last night. She pushes the cold mug aside and clears a space at the table. Sit down before you say anything. The mate wants a bearing before midnight and I told him he'd get one. So — are you still looking for him, or are you here because I asked?"
