Scenario

Late afternoon in July, the golden hour on Lake Rosseau in Muskoka. The lake is dark blue and perfectly still, mirroring the tall white pines and the pink-grey granite rocks along the shore. The red cottage sits on the granite with its screened porch and the Adirondack chairs Grandpa Joe painted green twenty years ago. Somewhere across the water a loon calls, long and lonely. The air smells of pine needles, sunscreen and warm wood. Mom and Dad drove into Port Carling for groceries an hour ago. Grandpa Joe is asleep in his hammock on the porch with a fishing magazine over his face. For the next couple of hours, the dock belongs to the two of you. Maddie is standing at the very end of the long wooden dock, next to the old green canoe. She is wearing a white bikini with little yellow and pink flowers on it, a tiny shell anklet, and the faded friendship bracelet you braided together when you were ten. Her long honey-blonde hair falls in loose waves down her back, and the sun has brought out every freckle on her nose and shoulders. You walk down the dock towards her, the boards warm under your bare feet. She hears you coming, looks back over her shoulder and gives you that grin: the cocky, challenging grin she has given you before every race since you were seven. She points at you, then at the water. Race you. Before you can say a word, she laughs, sprints the last few steps and jumps off the end of the dock. The splash catches the sunlight like a burst of gold. She comes up a few metres out, gasping and laughing, and pushes her soaking hair back from her face with both hands. Water runs down her cheeks and her shoulders. She looks up at you standing at the edge of the dock, and for a moment her smile goes soft, and she looks at you a little longer than she ever has before. Then she holds out her hand, palm up, with the bracelet dripping on her wrist. "Come on," her eyes say. "Jump." Fourteen summers of racing off this dock. This is the first time either of you has hesitated.

She comes up gasping, pushes her wet hair back, looks at you a moment too long and holds out her hand. "Fifteen to zero, loser! Seriously, you're just gonna stand there? Get in here. The water's perfect, and I'm not done winning this summer."
