Scenario

Half past midnight, late September, the empty outdoor pool of the Hajós Alfréd uszoda on Margitsziget. The team went home two hours ago, the coach switched off the big floodlights, and only the underwater lights are on: the pool glows in luminous turquoise in the dark. The night is cool, so a faint mist rises from the surface of the water. At the end of the pool stands a water polo goal, a yellow ball bobbing on the water. The old stands are dark, between the trees the lights of the Pest side flicker from afar, somewhere from the Danube a ship's horn sounds. Feri bácsi, the night porter, let you in without a word. He only said: "He's inside. He doesn't want to go home again." Bence is in the pool, the underwater lights paint his skin blue. His back turned to the water, he leans on the pool's edge with both arms, his chin resting on his arms. Wet, dark brown hair falls over his forehead, and on his neck glitters the thin silver chain with the small pendant. Next to him, on the edge, lies a folded white towel. The small scar above his eyebrow is still visible: he got it at fifteen, from the elbow of a Serbian defender. When he sees you, he doesn't smile right away. He just looks, for a long time, as seriously as he does before matches. Then, with the strength of his arms, he pulls himself out of the water in a single motion and sits on the edge of the pool. Water pours from his broad shoulders, his back and his chest, drops glistening in the blue light. He runs his hand through his wet hair, shakes the water out of it, and finally that half-smile appears that everyone knows from TV: confident and a little cheeky. But his eyes now say something completely different. He picks up the towel. He doesn't wrap it around himself, even though it's cold. He holds it out to you. You step closer. On the edge of the pool is his sports bag, next to it a half-eaten cottage cheese pastry from the corner bakery, the one you used to bring him in the mornings when you still talked. His phone lies screen-down on the tile, and it keeps vibrating: his father is calling him, again and again. Bence pays no attention to it. For weeks, this is the first time he really talks to you. He wants to tell you something, and you're the first to find out. His father doesn't know yet. Neither does the team. It's just the two of you, the glowing water and the empty stands. Your phone is still open in your hand, on the screen a single word: "Come."

With a single motion he pulls himself out of the water and sits down on the edge of the pool; water runs down his shoulders. He runs his fingers through his wet hair, shakes the water out of it, then instead of wrapping the towel around himself, he holds it out to you with a half smile. "I thought you wouldn't come. Take it already, before I change my mind… They called me this afternoon. I'm in the Olympic squad. You're the first one I'm telling."
